Paired with a Pypilot motor controller, this computer forms a high-performance boat autopilot that ensures excellent course-keeping while consuming less power than most other autopilots. Several Pypilot motor controller models are available to adapt the system to all existing steering actuators. Note that the 12-24V 30A model with clutch control is compatible with all actuators, whereas the 12V 7A model (without clutch control) is suitable only for actuators drawing less than 7A that do not require a clutch electromagnet or solenoid valve.
This ready-to-use computer features a watertight housing and a high-performance compass utilizing a modern 9-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU). It comes with an 8-button radio remote control and a second waterproof 4-button remote control.
This computer—now superseded by the CRC model—is no longer in stock but can still be supplied upon request. It is equipped with a short UART connection cable and a 45cm 5V DC power cable with a JST 2.0 connector, allowing it to connect to NaviTop 10A, 15A, and 30A motor controllers. When used with a 7A controller, this cable must be connected to a 12V-to-5V DC converter. Cables enter the waterproof housing via a cable gland. The location of the autopilot computer on the boat must be carefully chosen to avoid moving magnetic interference and to ensure good radio and Wi-Fi signal propagation. It should be kept away from high-traffic areas and surfaces where objects might be placed, ensuring that no moving metal or magnetic objects pass near or are set down close to the unit. The housing is not designed for long-term UV exposure in outdoor environments.
The computer is controlled via radio remote controls or over Wi-Fi using a computer, tablet, or smartphone.
All Pypilot motor controllers accurately measure the motor's current draw; this allows for effective travel limiting with most actuators when consumption reaches a set threshold. Pypilot also supports the use of a rudder angle sensor and limit switches.
In addition to Compass mode, Pypilot can operate in apparent wind, true wind, or GPS modes, provided it receives data from a wind vane and GPS. Data can be supplied via Wi-Fi.
Optionally, the computer can exchange NMEA data via USB (CU option). This requires the use of an NMEA-to-USB converter or a multiplexer with a USB output (not included). By adding a USB 2.0 hub or a multiplexer cable, multiple USB-to-NMEA0183, USB-to-NMEA2000, or USB-to-SeaTalk converters can be connected. Pypilot automatically detects and configures NMEA0183 data exchanged via the USB port. It is worth noting that several isolated USB-NMEA0183 and USB-NMEA2000 converters require no configuration and cost less than many multiplexers, while providing total galvanic isolation between all instruments; this enhances the system's robustness by preventing ground loops and offering resistance to electrical surges, such as the indirect effects of lightning.
In addition to being controllable via Wi-Fi, Pypilot broadcasts all its data—including data received via the optional USB port—to other applications over Wi-Fi. This creates a single Wi-Fi network that enables both Pypilot control and the sharing of navigation data with other devices.
The computer's circuit board integrates the TDK ICM20948 IMU chip and the remote controls receiver antenna. To ensure reliable operation in extremely humid conditions, the IMU is encapsulated in an insulating compound.
The computer's IMU accelerometers and magnetometers come pre-calibrated. This allows for immediate installation, with the compass becoming operational after the boat simply performs a slow 360-degree turn. Remote controls are pre-configured in the computer, though you can add more or modify the button functions.
Pypilot runs perfectly on a Pi Zero W (at 30% load). Replacing it with a Pi Zero 2W only results in a faster startup for the Pypilot web server, at the cost of higher power consumption.
The motor controller is not included.
An 8-button remote control and a 4-button waterproof remote control are provided.
If you already have a Pi Zero, we offer a ready-to-use computer with an SD card for €140 (excluding VAT), but without the Pi Zero. The SD card, programmed for a Pi Zero, contains the pre-calibration and configuration data for the computer's radio remote controls.
